Being one of the oldest cities in the world, Athens is a great destination for a family holiday. Great weather most of the year (however, avoid August with little ones as it can get very hot and too busy), delicious food and plenty of activities for families. In the summer it is also a good idea to combine the city experience with the beach and islands along the coast of Athens.
BabyBreaks has done the hard work for you and put together a selection of the best things to do in Athens with your family.
1. Climb up the Acropolis
Whether you stay for a week or a couple of days, this is a must do and unforgettable experience when visiting Athens. Once you reach the top you will admire the breathtaking views and show your kids the birthplace of democracy.
It is worth joining a kid friendly guided tour to learn about this wonderful site. We recommend “The Acropolis for families Group Tour” , check here for more information.
2. Lycabettus Hill
Standing 277 meters above sea level, Lycabettus Hill is certainly the highest spot of Athens and absolutely worth seeing.
The best way to get to the top and the most enjoyable for kids, will be to take the funicular. Be aware that it goes through a tunnel and you will have to wait until you reach the hill to admire the view.
3. Happy Train
A fun way to visit Athens. The Happy Train is a toy-like train on wheels getting around the major attractions and allowing you to Hop-on and Hop-off as you please. It is particularly great in the summer months when it is just too hot for the little ones to walk.
Should you decide to stay on the whole time, the journey takes about 40 minutes and will take you to more than 10 unique sites such as the Acropolis, the Zappeion or the new Acropolis Museum.
Working Hours: 9:00am until 9:00pm, winter period (last tour 8:00pm) – 9:00am until 11:00pm, summer period (last tour 10:00pm)
4. Floisvos’ Park Playground
Located 6 km away from the city centre in the South of Athens between the beach and the important coastal road Poseidonos Avenue, Floisvos is known to be one of the biggest playgrounds in Athens welcoming up to 1,400 children!! Here they can climb, play in sand pits, go on a carousel, slide from inflatable bouncy castles and much more.
The park is enormous and separated between 3 different areas based on the children’s age. This allows toddlers to be safely separated from older kids to avoid being pushed around too much.
Overall a fun day out for the whole family outside from the centre of Athens.

5. Attica Zooligical Park
The park, located in Sparta near Athens International Airport, has more than 300 animal species in an area of 20 hectares. Half of these species are endangered that they are trying to preserve and protect, also by educating their visitors to the importance of biodiversity.
Here you will meet over 2000 animals coming from 5 continents, from giraffes, hippos and monkeys to penguins, brown bears and dolphins.
They are also hosting the world’s third largest collection of birds with 1,100 birds from 300 different species.
