York is famous for all things foodie – tea, chocolate and ale, to name a few. Independent eateries line the award-winning Bishopthorpe Road (affectionately known as Bishy Road) whilst historic pubs and tearooms pepper the winding medieval streets of the city centre. Kids will love getting a cone from the Two Hoots Ice Cream Boat, which will keep them quiet while you peruse the street food scene at Shambles Market.
I have researched the best child friendly restaurants in York, so you can plan your mealtimes around the city.
1. Betty’s Tearoom
A York institution which has gained worldwide celebrity. Betty’s is certainly the place to go for cakes and Afternoon Tea. The building is as pretty as the patisserie – interiors are inspired by the Queen Mary ocean liner. Get there early to beat the queues – if you do have to wait, the children can pick their cake from the mouth-watering window displays as they stand in line.
Address: 6-8 St. Helen’s Square, York YO1 8QP

2. Brew & Brownie
An independent cafe famous for its pancakes. Brew and Brownie is perfect for breakfast or brunch. The locally sourced, seasonal food showcases the best of Yorkshire on a plate or in a cup, from artisan bread to loose leaf teas. Also there are plenty of choices for children aside from pancakes, and lots of vegan and gluten free options too.
Address: 5 Museum Street, York YO1 7DT

3. The Balloon Tree Farm Shop and Cafe
More than just a lunch out, this working farm offers a whole day out for the family. For instance, pick your own seasonal fruit and veg, from pumpkins to strawberries. Then head off to the cafe for delicious fresh food, with a dedicated children’s menu. The extensive children’s play area is right next to the cafe, so they can run off some steam while you relax with a coffee or locally brewed beer. One of the best Child Friendly Restaurants in York.
Address: Stamford Bridge Road, York YO41 1NB

4. The Pig and Pastry
Located on Bishopthorpe’s Road, known for its independent shops and eateries, The Pig and Pastry has the really welcoming feel of a neighbourhood cafe. The breakfast menu is a particular highlight, featuring organic eggs in all forms, homemade granola and fantastic pastries. There is a good selection of children’ books and toys to keep them amused while they wait for their food.
Address: 35 Bishopthorpe Road, York YO23 1NA
