3. Slough Ice Arena

Ice skating isn’t just for Christmas! It’s a fantastic way to get some exercise as a family and spend some quality time with your brood. You can practise your pirouettes all year round at the indoor Slough Ice Arena, less than 3 miles from Windsor. As well as the ice rink, there’s a brand-new climbing wall and recently revamped cafe, where you can warm up with a hot chocolate afterwards.

4. The Jelly Lounge

Set up by local mums Jenny and Tamar, who were fed up with the same old soft play centres, this ‘family club’ focuses on parents just as much as children. On one hand, adults can enjoy excellent, locally sourced food and great coffee in the stylish lounge areas. On the other hand, kids can let off steam in the soft play area or make friends in the tree top hideout.

Daily events include arts and crafts, mini chef classes, pottery workshops, baby and child yoga and much more. Recommended by Hello magazine, and Muddy Stilettos blog, The Jelly Lounge is proving itself to be a roaring success, thanks to its truly relaxing atmosphere for parents.

6. Windsor Castle

Number one on our list has to be the almighty Windsor Castle – home of our monarch, and the largest occupied castle in the world. Steeped in regal history, this amazing building could take certainly all day to explore, including the beautiful grounds (Windsor State Park) which stretch for nearly 5,000 acres. Most importantly, the kids will love to see the changing of the guard ceremony. It happens at 11am on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

BabyBreaks Tip: There is a lot of walking involved in this activity, as a result, make sure to plan in rest stops at the cafe or in the park, if you have little ones. Pushchairs can be used around the Castle grounds, however need to be checked in near the entrance to the State Apartments. Baby carriers and hip seats can be borrowed free of charge, subject to availability.

7. Legoland

Not just for Lego lovers, this theme park has more than 55 rides, shows and attractions for children to discover. Suited to children between 3 and 12, they can see London in miniature at Miniland, ride down the rapids in a viking boat, get their driving license at the Driving School and conquer the dragon at Knights Kingdom. You will be guaranteed a great Day Out in Windsor with your children.

You can even spend the night at the Legoland Hotel in themed bedrooms, if you want to make a weekend of it. There are often good discounts available for “stay and play” guests, so make sure you check the website for the latest offers.

8. Thames River Cruise

See the royal city of Windsor from a spectacular new angle on a 40 minute boat trip up the River Thames. This short cruise sails upstream to Boveney Lock, returning via Windsor Castle, Eton College, Mill House, Windsor Racecourse and the Brocas Meadows. The length of the trip makes it popular with families with young children. Boats depart frequently throughout the day so it’s easy to choose a time which suits you. The Home Park is close to where you alight, where you’ll find playground and picnic facilities.

9. Alexandra Gardens

A lovely park that’s popular with families and locals, Alexandra Gardens is above all, an oasis of tranquillity in the busy city. There are lots of facilities like a play area and mini golf, as well as plenty of green space and fountains to play in. Why not pick up some local food and have a picnic? In addition, the park hosts many events throughout the year such as a summer funfair and winter ice rink.

10. Cliveden House Gardens

This National Trust owned site is a wonderful place to visit in spring or summer, when the ancient woodland and manicured lawns overlooking the River Thames are bathed in sunshine. Cliveden House itself is a luxury hotel, but the glorious grounds are open for all to enjoy. Get lost in the maze, spot wildlife on one of the woodland walks and enjoy a spot of lunch in the Orangery Restaurant or Dolls House Cafe.
