1. Piccolo Teatro dei Pupi, Syracuse

What a fantastic way to get the kids interested in local culture is to watch a traditional Sicilian puppet show. Most of Sicily’s cities and large towns have a puppet theatre. Children can watch brave knights defeat evil monsters, mixing fairytale and legend with Sicilian history and childhood fantasies.

The shows are however in Italian, but it won’t matter to them one bit! You can usually pick up an English guide if you wish to follow the story more closely.

2. Villa Romana del Casale

A UNESCO world heritage site, this ancient Roman villa features above all some of the best preserved mosaics in Sicily. The kids will also be amazed by the vivid images of lions, tigers and warriors, amongst the ancient ruins.

Or course, most of the site is covered by a modern roof, so it’s perfect for a rainy day or to shelter from the midday heat.

3. Museo del Giocattollo

Firstly, children love Toys Museums where they can explore an amazing collection of vintage toys from the 19th and 20th centuries. Secondly, the displays are fun and interactive – touching and playing with the toys is actively encouraged.  So you needn’t worry about curious little ones with wandering hands!

4. Castello di Caccamo

The kids will absolutely love this huge Norman castle which is perched on a steep hill, dominating the skyline of Caccamo.

Your children will similarly enjoy the  prison cells and the Hall of the Armoury with its huge and impressive displays. In addition, you can admire outside amazing views from the western terrace, over the town and valley. In summary, a great activity to do in Sicily with your kids.

5. Museo dell’Acciuga

A museum about anchovies? Bear with us…!

If you’re staying in Palermo this unique museum is well worth a visit on a rainy day. Reviewers also rate this as one of the top museums in Sicily. You will explore not just the town’s fishing heritage but the whole of the island’s history, through interesting and unique artefacts.

Michelangelo, the charismatic owner, charms all who visit with his knowledge, insight and fantastic storytelling, peppered with traditional Sicilian songs. 6. EtnaLand Waterpark

Kids love a waterpark, and adults too, so it’s no surprise families love EtnaLand. This is one of the highest rated ‘Things to Do in Sicily’ on Trip Advisor. Situated at the foot of Mount Etna, the kids can enjoy loads of slides, rides and pools with the epic volcano as a backdrop. Highlights include wild rafting rivers and the largest wave pool in Europe. An alternative is Acqua Verde, which is easily accessible from Cefalù.

7. Beach day at Cefalù

This is undoubtedly one of the best beaches in Sicily, and a firm favourite with families. The wide sandy beach has plenty of loungers, and the sea is warm and shallow. There are lots of restaurants and shops on Catania’s pretty cobbled streets, and a stunning Cathedral too. So you have plenty of places to escape the midday heat. However, if you’re feeling energetic you can climb the huge rock at the end of the beach, for some magnificent views.

8. Boat trip to the Aeolian Islands

Discover three of the most beautiful Aeolian Islands on this mini cruise, leaving from Tropea. Firstly, visitors can bathe in the sulphur baths on Vulkano, known for their medicinal properties. 10. Monti Rossi Adventure Park

This treetop adventure park near Catania receives great reviews from families with young children. For instance, the kids will love to discover their inner Tarzan as they swing their way through the trees. In addition, there are less challenging routes for smaller children, so everyone is welcome.
