Lanzarote’s sunny climate, dramatic volcanic scenery and plentiful beaches make it a firm favourite with families all year round. Enjoying one of the warmest climates in Europe, this popular Canary Island promises hours of sunshine and warm seas, which are both perfect for numerous outdoor activities with your kids.

BabyBreaks has done the hard work for you and put together a selection of the best activities in Lanzarote.

1. Hit the Beach

Lanzarote is blessed with wide beaches edged by shallow, calm water, so no wonder it’s a favourite destination for young families. Our top three beaches on the island are below:

– Playa Blanca. This popular beach has soft golden sand, unlike many of the coarse black sand beaches on rest of the island, so it’s perfect for building sandcastles, sunbathing and playing in the surf. There are some small rides on the beach for little ones, and two play areas including a pirate ship which the kids will love.

– Playas Del Papagayo is part of the Monumento Natural de Los Ajachesso, a protected area of land famed for its unspoiled beauty. It’s slightly off the beaten track but you are rewarded with wonderful views from the headland and one of the prettiest beaches on the island. Although a little remote, it’s well equipped for visitors with a car park and café. Not suitable for pushchairs as the walk down to the beach is a little precarious.

– Puerto del Carmen is one of Lanzarote’s most popular beach resorts for families, offering several sandy beaches, lots of shops and cafes and old town boat dock El Varadero. Playa Grande is where most families choose to spend their days, so get there early to bag a good spot on the sand.

2. Watersports

The calm shallow waters of Lanzarote are perfect for kids trying their first go at kayaking, SUP, surfing or kitesurfing . There are even kids’ diving classes if they are aged 8 or over. Canary Island Divers in Puerto del Carmen offers ‘Bubble-maker’ courses in the pool or ocean, as well as open-water Junior PADI courses for children aged 10 and over.

3. Timanfaya National Park

The unique lunar landscape and steaming geysers of this famous volcanic park is a ‘must see’ on your holiday. Nicknamed the ‘Mountains of Fire’, Timanfaya tops the list of things to do in Lanzarote for almost all travellers.  Explore the amazing scenery on a coach trip, in a hire car, on a camel ride, or hike with the baby on your back if you’re feeling fit.

Don’t miss the restaurant right in the middle of the park, where your food is cooked on a volcano-powered BBQ!

Visiting Hours: 09:00 – 17:45 in winter and 09:00 – 18:45 in summer

4. Pardelas Park

Located in the north of the island, Pardelas Park is the perfect place to stop on the way back from the famous viewpoint, Mirador del Rio.  Small but attractive, Pardelas Park offers a play area, a farm area where the kids can feed the animals, as well as donkey rides and a pottery studio for them to get creative.

When it’s time to refuel, relax on the restaurant’s large shady terrace with its wonderful view of the surrounding mountains for a lunch of local wine and tapas.

Address: Calle la Quemadita, 88, 35541 Orzola, Las Palmas, Spain

Opening Hours: Open daily 10am – 6pm

5. Rancho Texas

Rancho Texas boasts exotic animals and a water park all set against a desert-ranch-style backdrop. A great day out for the family, this is one of the best things to do in Lanzarote with the kids. They will love seeing crocodiles, sea lions, white tigers, birds of prey, farm animals and lots more.

After meeting the animals, cool off in the waterpark complete with a large swimming pool, water slides, splash zone, fountains and a sunbathing area.
