Cambridge is at its prettiest in the summer, when narrowboats glide down the river, its green banks bathed in sunlight…There are beautiful parks and gardens to explore in the city centre, as well as several farms and animal centres in the surrounding rural area, which the kids will love.
BabyBreaks has done the hard work for you and put together a selection of the best child-friendly Outdoor activities in Cambridge.
1. Cambridge University Botanic Gardens
This tropical oasis in the city centre is home to a staggering array of plants from around the world – a wonderful place for a picnic on a sunny day. Grab a map to follow the ‘family trail’ or check out one of the seasonal family events such as Nature Weaving or Spring Yoga.
Address: 1 Brookside, Cambridge CB2 1JE
Opening Hours: Open daily 10am – 4/6pm (winter/summer)
What better way to take in the sights of the beautiful city than from a leisurely boat ride on the River Cam? There are numerous companies offering punting- you can choose to steer yourself (more challenging than it looks!) or have a guide who will also teach you about the historic landmarks you pass.

3. Shepreth Wildlife Park
A short drive from the city centre will take you to a whole world of wildlife at Sherpreth Park. Meet meerkats, tigers, wallabies and pandas, and don’t miss the daily feeding sessions and talks too. If the weather turns wet, Ringo’s play barn has a cafe and a soft play area for little ones.
Opening Hours: Thursday to Monday from 10am – 4:30pm
4. Wimpole Home Farm
Part of the National Trust Wimpole Estate, this is a wonderful day out for the whole family. The 3,000 acres of beautiful land encompasses a grand mansion, manicured gardens and a working farm. Little children will love seeing pig feeding, donkey grooming and meeting the rabbits, whilst older ones can enjoy the adventure playground. The shop and restaurant sells delicious local produce, so you can take a taste of the farm home with you.
Opening Hours: Friday to Sunday 10:30am – 3:30pm
5. Jesus Green Lido
A historic open air pool built in the 1920’s Jesus Green Lido is a really popular spot on sunny days. The water is not heated, but the kids never seem to feel the cold! Less brave adults can relax in the sauna or on the sunbathing terrace, as you sip a cool drink from the cafe.
Address: Chesterton Road, Cambridge CB4 3AX
