Most families like to get away from home in the half term and enjoy a holiday abroad. The kids love it, you love it, and you’ll be able to make some lifelong memories.
In the February half-term break 2020, a lot of people usually tend to favour heading to a Family Friendly Ski resort. Or possibly a trip to Tenerife, but this year it is very expensive. Flights to the Canaries are looking to set you back around £2000 for four people. Therefore, it is simply not economically viable for a lot of people to do this. Especially when you consider that this price does not even include hotel costs. And all those over things that need to be paid for. No. What you need are some alternative destination choices. Someplace that offers a bit of Sun, affordable prices, sightseeing opportunities, and good food. Well, we have been giving this little quandary a lot of thought, and have come up with a list of suitable alternatives that will not break the bank:
1. Lisbon, Portugal
The capital of Portugal, Lisbon, is a fantastic destination choice. The weather is beautiful, regularly hitting 16 degrees, and because the Sun is out, you can find a lovely sun trap, and you are still able to get a tan even in the February milder conditions. More importantly, though, it is possible to get a return flight for as little as £104 per person, and a package holiday deal for less than £200 per person.
So, with that in mind, here is a taster of things to do and see in lovely Lisbon. It is a coastal city, so there are beaches for you all to enjoy, the kids can splash about while you watch. There is the fantastic São Jorge Castle, with views over the city and plazas. You have Portugal’s equivalent of the Golden Gate Bridge, 25 de Abril Bridge, and Christ the Redeemer, Christ the King. You will all marvel at these sights. Why not catch tram 28 and really see the city, including the neighbourhood which climbs up to Graça. The children will love zipping around the city on one of these.
2. Sicily, Italy
Sicily is the famous ‘kicked’ Island just off the toe of Italy’s boot. It is in the Mediterranean Sea and is another excellent cheap alternative holiday destination for all the family. The weather is fine, with temperatures up around 12 degrees but because the Sun is actually shining, it makes it feel a lot warmer. You are able to pick up return flights for a minimum of £118 per person and package holidays for £200 per person.
Sicily has a rich history, and there is plenty to do. Why not take an excursion up Mount Etna which is an active volcano, if you are brave enough. This is something the kids will never forget. You could take a day trip to Palermo the capital, where you can see the 12th-century cathedral and the Palazzo dei Normanni which is thought to be over 1100 years old. And don’t forget the restaurants, Sicilian chefs are world-renowned, and you will not be found wanting. In fact, you could go on a walking and tasting tour. Then there is the stunning Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, if you want to see something truly authentic and ancient.

3. Cyprus, Greece
Cyprus is a Greek Island that is quite far east of mainland Greece, closer to Turkey, deep in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea. The temperatures here can hit 23 degrees even in February. Flights in half term can be bought for as little as £125 per person, and a package deal can be picked up for less than £180.
If you are a Sun worshipper, you’ll be pleased to know that Nissi Beach is a year-round beach and consists of its own cove which runs for around half a kilometre. For anyone who is a bit of a history buff, then visiting the Tombs of the Kings is a must. The kids will love the underground tombs which are carved out of the solid rock and are thought to date back as far as the 4th century BC. There is also Cape Greco with its nature trails and awesome sea views from the cliffs. This is a place that none of you will forget.

Malta consists of three islands around 80 kilometres south of Italy in the Mediterranean Sea. They are called Malta, Gozo, and Comino. The mercury can hit 16 degrees even in February, and the skies are clear for those precious rays to shine down. Flights can be picked up for as little as £133 per person, and package holidays for around £155 per person or less.
Malta is jam-packed full of historical sites having been inhabited since 5900BC. It also has plenty of beaches that are fun for you and the kids such as Ghajn Tuffieha Bay Mellieha and St. Peter’s Pool. You can go to the Marine Park and see a dolphin show, or go on an island-hopping adventure. You can even go diving into the underwater cave. This would be an unforgettable experience for you all.
5. Barcelona , Spain
Finally, Barcelona is the capital of the Catalonia region in the northeast of the country and is a popular destination. The weather is mild and hit around 15 degrees during the day. Flights can be bought for as little as £87 per person during the half-term period, and a package holiday can be purchased for around £200 per person.
You can take a hop-on hop-off bus tour around the city over one or two days. This is great for kids as they get to sit in the open-top bus and get off wherever they like (within reason obviously). You could watch a Flamenco show, and you must see the Sagrada Familia, which is still under construction. This is definitely one for the boys, but all you football fans out there could go on a tour around the FC Barcelona grounds.
