This year, February Half Term starts on Friday 14 February and ends on 23 February . If you are not fortunate enough to spend a week skiing or go in a Winter sun destination, rest assured the city of London has plenty of activities and great things to do during February Half Term. We’ve highlighted our top 10 but we are sure there are more to discover…
1. Imagine Children’s Festival at South Bank
The largest children’s festival in the UK returns for its 19th year, and 2020’s offering promises to be bigger and better than ever. This 2020 February Half Term edition will be 12 days of fun activities for families, from celebrating the Harry Potter books to learning how to feed dinosaurs! There are indeed numerous shows and workshops exploring music. But also literature, comedy and art, many of which are free. The festival is aimed at children aged 0 – 11.
2. Lightopia at Chiswick House & Gardens
Running from 22nd January 2020 – 1st March 2020, this immersive light trail is a magical experience for children and adults alike. Marvel at hundreds of handmade Chinese lanterns, giant illuminated model animals and impressive acrobatic displays. There are even a few funfair rides to enjoy too.
3. Puddle Jumping at London Wetland Centre in Barnes
Got a toddler who loves splashing in muddy puddles? Well the Puddle Jumping Championships will be right up their street! From Saturday 15th – Sunday 23rd February, kids can take on the challenge of the Puddle Jumping Obstacle Course, and enjoy lots of other fun outdoorsy activities while they’re there too. Help feed the otters, follow a nature trail or learn all about water sustainability at a fun, interactive show. A fun outdoor activity among our fave things do in London for February half term.
4. Trojan Tales at the British Museum
This fun Half Term event at the British Museum is a fantastic way to introduce your child to the wonders of Greek mythology. There will be giant art installations, creative workshops and storytelling, all based around Trojan tales of gods, heroes and mythical monsters. Overall, a fun way to re-discover the classic British Museum and keep your kids entertained.
5. The Water Babies at The Puppet Theatre Barge in Little Venice
This little-known puppet theatre is a real hidden gem in London, and one that’s sure to delight the kids. Step onto the converted canal barge where master puppeteers will entertain the whole family with charming shows, leaving the real world behind for an hour or two. This Feb Half Term you can immerse yourself in The Water Babies – a classic fairy tale which tells the story of a little boy who is transformed into a merman.
6. Star in the Jar at Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith
Another theatre production which is guaranteed to warm your heart. Following a little boy and his big sister on a magical adventure, this show is sure to reignite that special sibling bond between your little ones. Aimed at ages 3-8 years, Star in the Jar is playing at the Lyric Theatre from 18th ‐ 22nd Feb 2020. Book your tickets now before it is sold out!
7. Beatbox lessons at Elgar Room (Royal Albert Hall)
Budding music moguls will love this beatboxing masterclass from world record-breaking beatboxer SK Shlomo. A really unique Half Term activity, this is the perfect class to help kids gain confidence and learn a new skill. They are bound to be practising for weeks to come!
8. Book an Afternoon Tea
A quintessential British tradition, and not just for tourists either. Children’s Afternoon Teas are popping up all over London in recent years, as fancier establishments tap into the family market. This Half Term, treat your kids to some edible indulgence at world famous Fortnum & Mason, or fall down the rabbit hole with the Alice in Wonderland Tea Party at 51 Buckingham Gate.

9. Whatever the Weather at Wisley
This Half Term, why not visit The Royal Horticultural Society’s flagship garden at Wisley, just outside of London? This beautiful Surrey spot invites families to enjoy the great outdoors, whatever the weather. From 15th – 23rd February 2020, there will be plenty of fun organised activities to enjoy, from drop-in craft and planting workshops to a Family Garden Trail. Don’t forget your wellies!
10. Storytelling at Discover Children’ Story Centre
Last but not least, focused on story building and imagination, this fantastic immersive storytelling centre is one of our favourite places to take the kids. Children can follow a story trail based around Goldilocks and The Three Bears. The immersive journey takes you into the woods to discover a world of giants, palaces, gingerbread houses and treasure caves, meeting plenty of fun, cute characters along the way. A really charming place to spend the day in East London for February Half Term.
