Get active with the family this Autumn and sign up to one of these fun fitness events, happening nationwide in the next few months. September is the perfect month for a fresh new start after a summer filled with holidays, ice creams, beer gardens and BBQ’s. With kids back at school, completing a fun run is a great way to spend quality time with your brood. You’ll get fresh air, a dose of sunshine (if you’re lucky!) and a rush of post-exercise endorphins…plus it gives you a great excuse to refuel at one of London’s Best Brunch Spots.
Let’s look at our selection of Family Fitness events this Autumn:
1. Bournemouth Marathon Festival – Sat 5th October
Young runners aged 3-6 can get involved in the Kids’ Kilometre at the Bournemouth Marathon Festival weekend – a great chance to encourage outdoor activity in a beautiful seaside setting. At the end of the scenic coastal route they will receive a free t-shirt, medal and goodie bag, as well as their official race time. There will also be loads of entertainment for afterwards, from face painting to food stalls. Need somewhere to stay? Check out our list of family friendly Bournemouth accommodation here.
2. Dog Jog, Nationwide – Various Dates
One for the animal lovers, this fun family event in Autumn runs at over 20 locations around the UK, from June to October. The unique 5k jogging event for you and your four legged friend offers a relaxed, fun atmosphere with no times and no pressure. Whether you are raising money for a charity, Dog Jog is a brilliant opportunity to get outdoors with the kids. When you cross the finish line you’ll receive a ‘Doggy Bag’ packed with goodies for both you and your pooch.
3. Blenheim Palace Family Run – 29th September
One of the most scenic events in the runner’s calendar, this series of races is a perfect family day out. Run 2km, 10km or a Half Marathon against the epic backdrop of beautiful Blenheim Palace – the former home of Winston Churchill which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. All Half Marathon and 10km runners get free entry into the 2km Fun Run. So your kids can watch you tackle the lengthier course before you take on the 2km race as a family. Pack a picnic for afterwards to enjoy in Blenheim’s sprawling grounds.
4. Kids’ Mile at Richmond Runfest – 14th & 15th September
London families should head to Richmond Park this September for a weekend of health, fitness and a festival spirit, surrounded by beautiful scenery. Choose from the Kids’ Mile (14th Sept) or the Family Run (15th Sept), which coincide with the Full Marathon, Half Marathon, and 10k adult events. The Kids’ Mile is one or two loops of Richmond’s beautiful Old Deer Park and is suitable for children as young as 4, whilst the Family Run can be enjoyed all together, including the dog! Also, there will be live music, food and drink stalls (including a Champagne tent).
5. Color Run, Manchester or London – 7th or 28th September
You’ve probably seen this one all over Instagram – the Color Run, now in its 8th year, is an international running event famed for its fun, inclusive atmosphere, which celebrates healthiness, happiness and community spirit. Runners wearing white t-shirts are doused in coloured powder at each kilometre mark, so that by the end of the 5km course you ‘re wearing a rainbow coloured t shirt and hopefully a big grin! There are no timers and no official winners, it really is all about the taking part. All abilities are welcome, so you can walk or jog it as a family, even if you have young kids.
The remaining UK Color Run events for 2019 are in Manchester and London. So sign up now to take part in the largest running series in the world!
