We’ve visited several times—pre-kids and now with children—and each visit gets better. Stockholm didn’t just meet our expectations; it really opened us to discover more about Sweden.

1. Junibacken
Junibacken is a dream come true for book-loving kids and their parents. Dedicated to Swedish children’s literature (especially the beloved works of Astrid Lindgren), this magical museum combines play and imagination beautifully. The highlight is the Story Train, a gentle ride through Lindgren’s whimsical tales, narrated by the author herself. Kids can climb Pippi Longstocking’s house, dress up, or explore themed play areas based on other Swedish authors. There are also theatre shows, a fantastic children’s bookstore, and a cafĂ© with great views of the water. Junibacken is indoor, so it’s a perfect stop on a rainy day or during colder months.
2. Vasa Museum
The Vasa Museum might sound like something for grown-ups, but trust us it’s a hit with kids too. The centrepiece is the incredible Vasa warship, which sank on its first voyage in 1628 and was miraculously salvaged centuries later. Its sheer size is enough to wow children, and the museum does a great job of making the story accessible for young visitors. There are interactive exhibits, model ships, films, and even a fun family trail to follow. Kids can learn about shipbuilding, life at sea, and the dramatic history behind the Vasa. It’s educational, visually impressive, and surprisingly exciting for all ages.
3. Tom Tits Experiment
Tom Tits Experiment is what every science centre wishes it could be. This museum is completely hands-on, wildly fun, and full of things to touch, try, and explore. Spread over four floors (plus an outdoor park in summer), it’s packed with experiments and installations that explain science through play. Kids can build structures, test physics with water and air, try optical illusions, and even ride a bicycle on a wire. It’s the kind of place where learning feels like an adventure, and adults usually end up getting just as involved as the kids. Plan to spend a full day here. It is worth every minute.
4. The Royal Armoury (Livrustkammaren)
Tucked beneath the Royal Palace in Gamla Stan, the Royal Armoury is a small museum with a big wow factor. It’s packed with royal robes, glittering carriages, armour, swords, and even costumes from royal weddings. The museum is free to enter and incredibly family-friendly, with special dress-up sections where kids can try on medieval helmets, capes, and more. It’s not a huge space, which makes it ideal for younger children who might get overwhelmed in larger museums. The museum tells fascinating stories of Swedish kings and queens in a way that captures kids’ imaginations. Don’t miss the gold-covered royal sleighs!
5. Butterfly House (Fjärilshuset)
Located in the peaceful Haga Park, the Butterfly House offers a lovely tropical escape in the middle of Stockholm. Inside, the temperature is warm and humid which is perfect for the hundreds of exotic butterflies flying freely around. Kids can follow their flight paths, watch them land on flowers, and even learn about their life cycle up close. There’s also a small aquarium area with fish and sharks, adding extra excitement. Outside the greenhouse, Haga Park itself is perfect for a family picnic or a game of tag on the grass. It’s a calm and nature-filled break from the buzz of the city.
6. Skansen
Skansen is the ultimate all-in-one family outing. This huge open-air museum and zoo is set on a hill in Djurgården and combines Swedish history with fun animal encounters. Families can wander through old Swedish farmhouses, watch traditional crafts being made, and even try seasonal activities like midsummer dancing or gingerbread baking. The zoo features Nordic animals like moose, reindeer, wolves, and bears. And there’s a children’s zoo with goats, rabbits, and pony rides. It’s stroller-friendly and packed with things to see and do, making it ideal for kids of all ages. Plus, the views over Stockholm are stunning from up here!

7. Rosendals Trädgårds
Rosendals TrädgĂĄrd is a little slice of countryside right in the heart of DjurgĂĄrden. This biodynamic farm and cafĂ© is a peaceful, green space where families can unwind. Kids can explore vegetable patches, flower gardens, and winding gravel paths while parents relax with coffee and fresh organic pastries. Seasonal workshops are sometimes offered, especially during holidays, where children can plant seeds, make crafts, or learn about gardening. There’s plenty of space to run and play, and the overall vibe is welcoming and relaxed. It’s the kind of place where you end up spending more time than planned. You’ve been warned!
8. Gröna Lund
Gröna Lund is a classic amusement park that feels vintage in the best way, right on the waterfront in Djurgården. With rides for every age from gentle carousels for toddlers to wild roller coasters for teens and thrill-seeking parents, Gröna Lund a crowd-pleaser. There are carnival games, funfair snacks, and even concerts during the summer months. The park is compact but cleverly laid out, which makes it manageable with kids. Lines can be long on weekends, so try going on a weekday or during off-peak times. Gröna Lund delivers the fun of a big theme park with a charming, old-school atmosphere.
9. Lida Nature Parkour (Lida FriluftsgĂĄrd)
If your kids need to burn off some energy, Lida Nature Parkour is the perfect solution. Located about 30 minutes from central Stockholm, this forest activity park offers a natural obstacle course built from wood and stone. Kids can climb, jump, balance, and swing their way through the course, testing their coordination and strength in a totally natural setting. It’s great for all ages, and there are hiking trails, swimming spots, and picnic areas nearby. In winter, Lida transforms into a cross-country skiing paradise. It’s an active, outdoor alternative to city sightseeing and a refreshing way to enjoy Sweden’s forests.
10. Paradox Museum
The Paradox Museum is where science meets illusion in the most entertaining way. It’s packed with over 70 exhibits that twist your sense of reality. For instance you will discover upside-down rooms, shrinking chairs, and mirrors that defy logic. Kids love trying to figure out how the tricks work, and the museum encourages touching, exploring, and photographing everything. It’s especially great for older kids and tweens, though younger ones will still enjoy the weirdness. This isn’t a place where you’re told “don’t touch”. In fact, the more you interact, the better the experience. It’s quirky, curious, and completely different from your typical museum stop.
11. ABBA The Museum
Even if your kids don’t know all the words to Dancing Queen, ABBA The Museum is still loads of fun for the whole family. This interactive museum lets visitors dress up in 70s glam, mix songs in a sound booth, and even perform on stage with holograms of the band! It’s bright, energetic, and hands-on. Great for kids who love music and movement. Adults will enjoy the nostalgia, while younger visitors can dance, sing, and explore the band’s colourful story. Located on DjurgĂĄrden, it’s easy to combine with nearby attractions like Gröna Lund or Skansen. Don’t miss the glittery photo ops!
12. Land and Water Tour
Turn your city tour into an adventure with Stockholm’s amphibious bus! This one-of-a-kind vehicle starts out on land, driving past major city sights with a fun, live guide. Then—splash!—it transforms into a boat and cruises right into the water, delighting kids and surprising onlookers. The entire tour lasts about an hour and is packed with stories, jokes, and cool facts about the city’s history. The novelty of riding both on land and in the water makes it an unforgettable highlight for children. It’s an ideal way to see Stockholm from both perspectives without wearing out little legs.
13. Avicci Experience
The Avicii Experience is a moving and interactive tribute to one of Sweden’s biggest DJ stars. And it’s much more than just a museum. Older kids and teens especially will enjoy exploring music production rooms, creating their own beats, and diving into the life and work of Tim “Avicii” Bergling. With immersive visuals, listening stations, and hands-on sound mixing, it celebrates creativity, emotion, and the power of music. It’s also a gentle, thoughtful place to start conversations about mental health. Located in Space Stockholm (a digital culture centre), it’s a great stop for music lovers and aspiring DJs in the family.

14. Viking Museum and Viking Ride
At the Viking Museum, the past comes to life in a way that’s exciting for kids and adults alike. Learn about the Viking Age through fascinating displays of weapons, clothing, and ship models. The highlight for families is Ragnfrid’s Saga, a short indoor ride that tells the story of a Viking family through immersive scenes and narration. Kids can try on helmets, handle replica swords, and discover what daily life was like for real Viking children. It’s educational without being boring—ideal for sparking imagination and interest in history. Plus, it’s located right on the water with beautiful views outside.
15. VRAK Museum of Wrecks
VRAK is Stockholm’s unique museum dedicated to shipwrecks and the secrets hidden beneath the Baltic Sea. Through high-tech exhibits, virtual dives, and fascinating digital storytelling, kids can explore real underwater archaeology without getting wet. The museum is very visual and interactive, featuring touchscreens, models, and a chance to “dive” using VR technology. It’s ideal for curious kids who love mysteries, ships, and a bit of adventure. It’s also close to the Vasa Museum, so you can pair the two in one visit.
